There is a particular kind of heaviness that comes from only ever noticing what is wrong. The unanswered prayer. The diagnosis. The relationship that did not heal the way you hoped. It is real, and God never asks you to pretend it is not. But there is also a quiet miracle that happens when, in the middle of all that heaviness, you choose to notice one true, good thing and say thank you out loud.
Gratitude as Defiance, Not Denial
Gratitude is not denial. It is defiance. It is looking at a hard day and still finding one thread of God’s faithfulness woven through it.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 says, “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Notice it does not say to be thankful for every circumstance. It says in every circumstance, which means even while you are hurting, you can still find something true to hold onto.
A Simple Way to Practice It
Maybe tonight all you can find is that you woke up breathing. That someone texted to check on you. That the sun came up anyway. Write it down. Say it out loud. Let it be small.
Conclusion
Over time, gratitude does something medicine alone cannot do. It softens the grip fear has on your mind and reminds your heart that God has not gone anywhere, even when everything else feels uncertain.
